The Player 23 online campaign was developed to engage and excite rugby fans through multiple digital platforms. These include a website, desktop applications, emailers & banner advertising. We focused on delivering relevant content directly to the fans while building Vodacom's brand as the supporter of South African supporters.

With the more and more South Africans spending time online, providing an informative digital platform with which to engage with them was an obvious channel for communication.

We designed a fresh website with strong, clear calls to action to encourage site visitors to download their own desktop application and become their team's Player 23. Thus far, this has proven extremely successful with 24% of unique site visitors having downloaded and installed the desktop application.

Fan Interaction

To build further excitement around the Player 23 concept, specially chosen photographers where sent to each South African Super 14 match to photograph eager fans. These photos where then uploaded to the Player 23 website where fans could easily see their pics and send them onto their friends via email or via their desktop application. Fans where also encouraged to upload their own videos depicting their determination to be Player 23.

Fans who where running the desktop application where also able to interact with other fans via the application by messaging each other, commenting on personal photos and videos and challenging each other to better their score in the Kick-It To Win-It Game.

Website Competition

Competition Mechanisms

With a Ford Bantam Bakkie as the prize, the online competition proved to be hugely popular. The uncomplicated entry form encouraged fans to refer submit their details and then to refer their friends to enter the competition as well. Within the first 10 days of the launch over 5000 entries where received. These entrants in turn referred over 20 000 friends.

Along with this grand prize, there were 100's of other great prizes up for grabs with a multitude of ways for fans to share in the spoils. Regular users of the desktop application where rewarded for their ongoing interaction. Fans won Player 23 kit items as well as match tickets, Vodacom airtime vouchers and much more.

Every avid Super 14 fan would regard having key rugby related information at their fingertips crucial to remaining their team's biggest fan. Combine this access to info with a platform to connect with your friends and compete for prizes, and you have a winning idea. The Player 23 Desktop Application was developed with this in mind.

The application adds tremendous value to its users while providing Vodacom with a unique communication platform based on segmented user information.

Through the built in announcement mechanism Vodacom is represented on the desktops of thousands of rugby fans.

  • • Rugby Blog where users could share their views about upcoming matches
  • • Personalised "locker" section where users can upload photos & videos and connect with friends

  • • Super Bru Match Prediction tool integration - allowing users to compete by predicting the results of upcoming matches
  • • Fixtures, Logs and Results available immediately after each game

To drive traffic to the Player 23 website and encourage internet users to enter the online competition, banner advertising appeared across a wide range of sports websites including IOL, Iafrica, SA Rugby, Sport 24, Shape, Sports Illustrated, Mens Health and BBC. Banners also appreared on many of the South Africa team's own websites.

Numerous emailers sent out at various stages during the Player 23 campaign.

Routine emails where sent out keeping the growing number of subscribers up to date with the changes to the website as well as updates to the desktop application.

Automated emailers where triggered from within the Desktop Application if a user should challenge a friend or invite a friend.

Special emails where also sent out the database, announcing the various competitions: the addition of the Ford Bantam Bakkie Competition, the Submit your video competition etc.
